what is freedom?
Since I use the internet for ministry and blogging I am also very involved in social media. I have several blogs where I share about country life, homemaking, parenting and such and always about Jesus. I have a mission statement that clearly states I have an ulterior motive in all I do. It can be summed up by saying that it is to draw everyone everywhere into a closer relationship with the Lord. Not a religious relationship but a personal one. I have an account on facebook, twitter, and sometimes I even look at things on myspace. All are mission fields, however I think myspace is too big of a mission field even for me, and I have been know to minister in crack neighborhoods so that is saying a lot. I am not too shocked by the behavior of sinners, I mean sinners are expected to sin right? But I am often shocked by those who claim to be born again. And more often than not their behavior is excused away by one word – freedom-.
They say “but I got free from legalism, I can do what I want.”
The Word says “Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God.”
And the verses before and after it show why.
For it is God’s will that by doing good you should silence the ignorant talk of foolish men. Live as free men, but do not use your freedom as a cover-up for evil; live as servants of God. Show proper respect to everyone: Love the brotherhood of believers, fear God, honor the king.
1 Peter 2:15-17
We have all fallen short to the glory of God, and we have all sinned. But sin is not something to make light of or joke about, willfully continue in or even act like it has no consequences, I mean there is more to it. The payment for sin is death. If you sin, you die. Yes Jesus died for our sins, and we can be redeemed, but if we continue to sin there is no evidence of redemption.
No one who lives in him keeps on sinning. No one who continues to sin has either seen him or known him.
1 John 3:6
A blood bought believer HATES SIN, they don’t wallow in it and then brag about it on facebook or myspace. Now before anyone gets all self righteous with me here let me give you an example. Maybe you wouldn’t commit adultery and tell everyone but would you watch a movie where that is the main theme and then tell everyone it was wonderful? I have seen it. Would you Take God’s name in vain publically? Probably not but I see folks brag about the movie they just saw and talk about how great it was then I look up the reviews to see if it is good and find out it has the Lord’s name taken in vain several times. Do you realize the word d..m means sending one to eternal hell? Is that what you want to say about the Jesus who paid for your sins? Is that want you want to hear? That grieves my Spirit and should yours too if you claim to love Him. Jesus is the fulfillment of the Law rather than the excuse to not use it.
But I tell you that anyone who looks at a woman lustfully has already committed adultery with her in his heart. If your right eye causes you to sin, gouge it out and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to be thrown into hell. And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away. It is better for you to lose one part of your body than for your whole body to go into hell.
Matthew 5:28-30
In the Old covenant we were guilty for committing the sin. In the new were are guilty if we look at it, touch it or even think about it without rebuking the thought. Jesus knows if you think about it too long you will rationalize it in your own mind and finally convince yourself that it isn’t so wrong. And pretty soon you are posting about it on facebook and causing others to stumble. Then satan not only has you but everybody on your friends list. So yes, you are free, free to spend eternity in hell if you so choose, pretty dumb thing to do over a stupid movie if you ask me. And you are free to drag all of your friends down with you, however the consequences for that are worse, as if anything can be, but they are.
But if anyone causes one of these little ones who believe in me to sin, it would be better for him to have a large millstone hung around his neck and to be drowned in the depths of the sea.
“Woe to the world because of the things that cause people to sin! Such things must come, but woe to the man through whom they come!
Matthew 18:6-7
The little one being referred to is the one whom you have been sharing the Gospel with and just got saved, or the one whom is watching you trying to learn how to live like a believer. Walking in the Light is a continual learning process, and sometimes we can send folks back to the pit instead of bringing them up to a higher level.
“Open my eyes that I may see wonderful things in your law.”- Psalm 119:18
Freedom is given to us to further the Kingdom, not hinder it.

That is so true, Penny. Although I am not legalistic, I cannot understand how a genuine Christian can take sin so lightly. One of the things I appreciate about the Old Testament is that it reminds me again and again just HOW serious God is about sin.
I praise Him that much more because of His undeserved grace!
By the way, I too am a pastor’s wife married to a Jim! How neat. You’re welcome to come by and visit me on my new blog!
Love in Christ,
Michelle
